Harry Potter" E-books get worldwide library distribution

(TheWrap.com) - The "Harry Potter" saga may have seen the end of its run in the movie theaters, but J.K. Rowling's wizardly brain child will live on in the world's libraries.

British distributor OverDrive has struck a deal with Pottermore -- the online home of all things Potter -- to distribute "Harry Potter" e-books and digital audiobooks in school and public libraries worldwide.

The deal calls for the books to be distributed in more than 20 languages throughout OverDrive's global network of libraries, which currently numbers more than 18,000.

All seven books in Rowlings' series will be included. This will mark the first time that the titles will be available for lending in digital form in libraries.

The "Harry Potter" book series, which has sold more than 400 million copies worldwide, is credited with sparking an enthusiasm for reading in a generation of children.

"J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter is a once-a-lifetime phenomenon and has been an extremely significant catalyst for reading and literacy for current and future generations," Steve Potash, OverDrive's CEO and president, said of the agreement. "We are honored to bring this beloved storytelling experience digitally to public and school libraries worldwide."

"Housewives" star Taylor Armstrong writing memoir

(TheWrap.com) - Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Taylor Armstrong, whose estranged husband Russell killed himself in August, is penning a memoir about her life experiences, TheWrap has confirmed.

The book, to be published by Simon & Schuster imprint Gallery Books, will be published in February 2012. It bears the tentative title "Hiding From Reality: My Story of Love, Loss, and Finding the Courage Within" and will weigh in at 272 pages.

Armstrong's husband Russell was found dead in the Los Angeles home where he was staying in August, in what the coroner's office would ultimately determine to be a suicide. Taylor had filed for divorce from Russell, a venture capitalist, the month before. He was 47.

In September, during an interview with "Entertainment Tonight"'s Nancy O'Dell, Armstrong revealed a long history of physical abuse in her marriage to Russell, noting that her estranged husband told her he was worried he might kill her at some point.

"He had mentioned he was afraid he might kill me, and I think he meant it in almost an accidental way, that he would get so angry at me at some time that he would hit me, and I would hit something, or he would grab me by the neck and something would go wrong," Armstrong said.

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly writing 2 more books

(AP) — Fox News host Bill O'Reilly has signed on to write two more books, including a presidential history.

The conservative commentator and best-selling author already has memoir "Bolder and Fresher" due from Henry Holt and Co. His next two books will include a presidential story, the president to be revealed later, the publisher announced Monday. The third book is yet to be determined.

O'Reilly's current hit is his first work of history, "Killing Lincoln," which topped The New York Times nonfiction hardcover list this fall and has sold nearly 1 million copies, Holt said. Stephen Rubin, Holt's president and publisher, said O'Reilly planned a series of books on presidents "very much in keeping" with "Killing Lincoln."

"They will be history told in a narrative, novelistic fashion," Rubin said.

O'Reilly's previous releases include "Pinheads and Patriots," ''Culture Warrior" and the memoir "A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity." The "O'Reilly Factor" star's latest deal continues his longtime publishing partnership with Rubin, who first worked with O'Reilly at Broadway Books, then brought him over when he joined Holt in 2009.

"The reason my books have been successful is because of the amazing support provided by the 'Factor' audience, and Steve Rubin," O'Reilly said in a statement. "It's a dream partnership."

Taylor Swift donates 6,000 books to US library

(AP) — Taylor Swift wants children in the Pennsylvania city of Reading to hit the books — and she's made that easier by giving 6,000 volumes to the local library.

Librarians unveiled the donation from the Grammy-winning country singer Thursday. Swift grew up in nearby Wyomissing and wasn't able to attend the event.

Swift partnered with publisher Scholastic Inc. to donate the books for children and young adults. The titles were chosen by local librarians.

Reading is a struggling city about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Philadelphia. Swift's representatives told library officials she wanted to help economically troubled libraries.

Librarians say Swift's books will be marked with a white star on the spine and a sticker inside. They say they hope Swift's popularity will motivate more children and teens to read.

New e-book club includes works by Alice Walker

(AP) — A digital publisher of Pat Conroy, Alice Walker and other writers has formed an online book club with a website that has for years served as a hub for reading groups.

Open Road Integrated Media announced Friday that it was partnering with BookMovement.com, which includes reading guides and lists of the most popular book club choices. The new club will be called DigiReaders and among the books to be discussed are Conroy's "The Prince of Tides" and Walker's "The Temple of My Familiar." Free e-releases will be offered each month through BookMovement's site.

The book club was scheduled to go live Friday.

Victor Appleton [pseudonym] for Howard R. Garis- American author best known for his Uncle Wiggly series featuring the gentleman rabbit with floppy ears in top coat and hat. He also penned the majority of the Tom Swift stories under his pseudonym "Victor Appleton".

His first published novel's failure was not encouraging, With Force and Arms: A Tale of Love and Salem Witchcraft (1902). HOW TO THROW A BANGING BOOK LAUNCH!

Many authors are launching books left and right these days to get the word out about their new book.

As we know, first impressions are key to your potential readership.

Here's some great tips on how to throw a banging book launch!

1. Decide on a theme. Either try to stay in line with the genre of your book or get really creative and go with a scene in your book.

*Sometimes being really creative allows for the attendees to truly tap into what your book is all about without even reading it.

2. Party favors!

*Creating party favors with your book as the center piece is key. There are so many little things you can create to make your book launch fabulous. So coming up with a creative list of what you want is key an keeps you organized. Remmber, it allows you to showcase your book all throughout the party.

Also, as the book launch comes to an, send your readers home with a signed copy of your baby (book), so they don't forget.

3. Fun food!

*Having fun food (finger food that is) for your attendees allows for great lit convo and it saves your guest from leaving and having to go somewhere else.

4. Venue!

*The venue to launch your book is very imporant if not the most important. Planing ahead to secure a venue is key, especially if you have a long guest list.

*If your an author on a strict budget (like most) then use your head and get out in your community to secure a venue. For instance, if you don't have the money to secure the place you want, then coming up with a creative plan to get a place is key. Meaning, a give or take sort of thing. Sometimes if you give a little, then others will give alot.

5. Marketing!

*Launching your book is very important, so you want to create a buzz in your community to get the word out. Utilizing places like your local radio station, putting up signs, handing out fliers, and internet social media will increase the buzz not only for your book launch, but for your newly anticipated book.

As you set out to market your book launch, don't forget to have books available to hand out to the businesses that your asking to help you. They to want to know your the real deal behind the book your trying to create a buzz for.

6. Have fun!

*Remember to have fun in the process. It' alot of work, but in the end it's all worth it. Your literary blood, sweat and tears will pay off, but only if you put forth the effort to make it a true success.

Self-help author convicted of negligent homicide

(AP) — A self-help guru was found guilty of three counts of negligent homicide Wednesday in a case that shined a spotlight on a deadly Arizona sweat lodge ceremony that ended in chaos, with participants vomiting, shaking and being dragged outside.

Jurors reached their verdict with remarkable swiftness: They took less than 10 hours to convict James Arthur Ray following a four-month trial that included hundreds of exhibits and countless hours of testimony.

The eight men and four women were given the option of convicting Ray of manslaughter but decided on the lesser charge instead. He faces a sentence ranging from probation to nearly 12 years in prison.

Ray fought back emotion as the verdict was read. His parents and brother sat behind him, while victims' friends and family members held hands and looked on from across the courtroom.

Prosecutors asked that Ray be taken into custody immediately, but the judge denied their request.

More than 50 people participated in the October 2009 sweat lodge that was meant to be the highlight of Ray's five-day "Spiritual Warrior" seminar near Sedona.

Three people died following the sauna-like ceremony aimed at providing spiritual cleansing. Eighteen people were hospitalized, while several others were given water to cool down at the scene.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys disagreed over whether the deaths and illnesses were caused by heat or unknown toxins. Ray's attorneys have maintained they were a tragic accident. Prosecutors argued Ray recklessly caused the fatalities.

Ray used the sweat lodge as a way for participants to break through whatever was holding them back in life. He warned participants in a recording of the event played during the trial that the sweat lodge would be "hellacious" and that participants were guaranteed to feel like they were dying but would do so only metaphorically.

"The true spiritual warrior has conquered death and therefore has no fear or enemies in this lifetime or the next, because the greatest fear you'll ever experience is the fear of what? Death," Ray said in the recording. "You will have to get a point to where you surrender and it's OK to die."

Witnesses have described the scene following the two-hour sweat lodge ceremony as alarming and chaotic, with people vomiting and shaking violently, while others dragged "lifeless" and "barely breathing" participants outside. Volunteers performed CPR.

More than 20 people were transported to hospitals. Kirby Brown, 38, of Westtown, N.Y., and James Shore, 40, of Milwaukee died upon arrival. Liz Neuman, 49, of Prior Lake, Minn., slipped into a coma and died more than a week later.

In court Wednesday, members of Neuman's family and a friend of Brown held hands and smiled when the verdict was read.

"Justice was served in there," Neuman's ex-husband, Randy Neuman, said later.

Mika Cutler, who Brown visited in Moab, Utah, the week before the ceremony, said: "There was not a moment in my mind that I didn't think he (Ray) was responsible for this tragedy."

Ray quickly left the courtroom with his family after the hearing, saying "No, not at this time" when asked if he had any comment.

Ray's attorneys maintained the deaths were nothing but a tragic accident, and said Ray took all the necessary precautions to ensure participants' safety. They contend authorities botched the investigation and failed to consider that toxins or poisons contributed to the deaths and called two witnesses to support that argument.

Prosecutors relied heavily on Ray's own words to try to convince the jury that he was responsible for the deaths. They said a reasonable person would have stopped the "abomination of a sweat lodge" when participants began exhibiting signs of distress about halfway through the ceremony.

Sweat lodges typically are used by American Indians to rid the body of toxins by pouring water over heated rocks in the structure.

Prosecutors have lined up nine witnesses to testify at a hearing next week that will determine whether any aggravating circumstances factor into Ray's sentencing. The circumstances include Ray's position of trust with the defendants, and any emotional or financial suffering by the victims' families, according to documents filed by prosecutors.

Ray became a self-help superstar by using his charismatic personality and convincing people his words would lead them to spiritual and financial wealth. He used free talks to recruit people to expensive seminars like the Sedona retreat that led to the sweat lodge tragedy. Participants paid up to $10,000 for the five-day program intended to push people beyond their physical and emotional limits.

Ray's popularity soared after appearing in the 2006 Rhonda Byrne documentary "The Secret," and Ray promoted it on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Larry King Live."

But his multimillion-dollar self-help empire was thrown into turmoil with the sweat lodge deaths. Ray ended his seminars shortly after but has continued to offer advice throughout his trial via the Internet and social networking sites.

Rowling set to unveil new Harry Potter venture

(Reuters) – Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling will unveil her latest venture involving the boy wizard Thursday, ending fevered speculation among fans about what comes next.

Having announced a new website (www.pottermore.com), the British author has kept its contents a closely guarded secret, giving previews to just a handful of the biggest fan sites who have been sworn to silence.

All will be revealed Thursday, with a countdown clock linked to the website indicating that it will go live at noon London time (7 a.m. ET).

"The owls are gathering ... Find out why soon" is all the link says.

What many Potter fans would like most would be an eighth novel to follow on from the seventh and "final" installment "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" published in 2007.

But Rowling's publicist has already made clear that it would not involve a new book.

The seven-novel series has sold more than 400 million copies worldwide, and, along with the blockbuster movie franchise, turned Rowling into the world's wealthiest writer.

Other options on the website include a social networking fan site, an online game or the launch of the novels as ebooks.

The announcement comes just a few weeks ahead of the theatrical release on July 15 of the eighth and final Harry Potter film which will be shown in 3D. The seven movies released so far have grossed $6.4 billion in ticket sales..

Purple Prose-is a term of literary criticism used to describe passages, or sometimes entire literary works, written in prose so extravagant, ornate, or flowery as to break the flow and draw attention to itself. Purple prose is sensually evocative beyond the requirements of its context. It also refers to writing that employs certain rhetorical effects such as exaggerated sentiment or pathos in an attempt to manipulate a reader's response.

When it is limited to certain passages, they may be termed purple patches or purple passages; these are often noted as standing out from the rest of the work.

The term purple patch is also used in a more general, and more unequivocally positive, sense to refer to a period of outstanding achievement. New comic book to tell Martha Stewart's life story

(AP) Martha Stewart's media aspirations just got bigger: Meet Martha Stewart, comic-book heroine.

The woman who created her own media empire — television, magazines and more — is getting a biographical treatment in her own comic book next month.

"Female Force: Martha Stewart," a one-shot issue from Bluewater Productions Inc. to be sold in comic book shops, bookstores and online, will focus on how Stewart rose to become of the nation's best-known purveyors of home decor, cooking and confident but practical living.

It's the latest in a line of titles from the Vancouver, Wash.-based publisher, with previous subjects in the "Female Force" family of titles focusing on Hillary Rodham Clinton, Michelle Obama, Barbara Walters, Sarah Palin and Margaret Thatcher, among others.

Publisher Darren G. Davis said the comic, written by C.W. Cooke, will look at all sides of Stewart, including her rapport with fans as well as her conviction on insider trading.

"Our goal is to show the behind-the scenes machinations — many of them ignored by the mainstream media — that resulted in Martha Stewart becoming the phenomenon she is," he said.

A comic book, he said, was the perfect way to do that.

"A visual medium provides perspective that is not only accessible but more relatable to the average person without losing any of the information involved," Davis said.

Cooke said he wrote the issue because Stewart embodies the "American Dream" and "sounds like a superhero," too.

"I am writing Martha Stewart as both icon and from a perspective of someone who might see her as callous, calculating and scheming," he said.

Cooke notes that in addition to being a businesswoman, entrepreneur and famous brand name, Stewart has been a model and a small business owner.

"She's been to jail and she's come out unscathed," he said. "She sounds like a superhero, but really, Martha is an amazing human being and I hope readers love learning about her as much as I did."

(AP) The world just can't get enough of Samuel L. Jackson and four-letter words.

A free version of the actor's cussing audio of the best-selling "Go the (Bleep) to Sleep" has been downloaded 160,000 times since becoming available two days ago, audio publisher Audible Inc. announced Thursday.

It's a huge number for audiobooks, but not a record. The final Harry Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," sold more than 200,000 audio copies during its first 48 hours.

The hardcover of "Go the (Bleep) to Sleep," Adam Mansbach's adults-only bedtime lament, officially went on sale this week. It was No. 1 on Amazon as of midday Thursday.

Jennifer Hudson writing book about weight loss

The Academy Award-winning actress and singer has inked a deal with Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Group, to pen a memoir detailing her struggles with weight. The still-untitled book, due in January 2012, will also expand on how she shed 80 lbs (36 kg)

Hudson has had her share of weight issues. Dubbed "the big girl" as a contestant on season 3 of "American Idol," she transformed her body for her Oscar-winning turn as Effie in "Dreamgirls" by gaining more than 20 lbs (9 kg). She signed on as a Weight Watchers spokeswoman last year and has since gone from a size 16 to a svelte size 6.

"I'm in the best shape of my life!" she recently gushed to People. Still, she admitted, "In my head, I am still the same weight I was before, It takes a while to get used to it." But one thing is certain. Said Hudson, "This is the way I want to be and the way I want to stay!"

Hudson released her second album, "I Remember Me," in March. The set has sold 338,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Serbian-US writer Obreht scoops literary prize

(AFP) – Serbian-American author Tea Obreht became the youngest ever winner of Britain's prestigious Orange Prize for Fiction for her novel The Tiger's Wife.

The 25-year-old, born in Belgrade, accepted the £30,000 ($49,100, 33,700 euros) prize at a ceremony at London's Royal Festival Hall.

"It is a tremendous honour," the author said after picking up the award. "I was stunned and I did not expect it and I did not prepare anything. I'm really still not processing it."

The Tiger's Wife, Obreht's debut novel, tells the story of a young doctor inspired by her grandfather's stories to embark on a journey through the war-torn nations of the former Yugoslavia.

Obreht, who now lives in the US, said she hoped the novel painted a "fairer picture" of the Balkan war.

"I'm really happy that it will be translated into Serbo-Croatian which means my grandmother, who does not speak any English and has never read any of my books will be able to read it."

The Orange award is presented annually to a female author for the best novel written in English. Previous winners include Lionel Shriver and Zadie Smith.

Historian Bettany Hughes, who chaired the four-woman judges panel, said Obreht was "a truly exciting new talent".

"This is a fiction prize and what this book does is celebrate the power of storytelling," she added.

Obreht left Belgrade in 1992 when the region descended into civil war and moved to the United States in 1997.

500-year-old book for sale in Utah for $35K

(AP) A partial copy of a 500-year-old book considered one of the earliest and most lavishly illustrated works of the 15th century is now on sale for $35,000 at a rare book shop in Utah.

Book dealer Ken Sanders was shocked back in April when while volunteering at a fundraiser for a small town museum in Sandy, just south of Salt Lake City, a man arrived with the unusual find pulled from his attic. It had been gathering dust for decades.

"There was just something almost dreamlike, something surreal about a five-century-old book being found here," said Sanders, who appraises items for PBS's Antiques Roadshow and owns Ken Sanders Rare Books in Salt Lake City.

The German language edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle, printed by Anton Koberger and published in 1493, is a world history beginning in biblical times. It is believed there are several hundred copies in circulation worldwide, making it not-so-rare of a find, especially with about two-thirds of its pages missing from its tattered binding.

Still, to a book collector, it's a genuine must-have, said Heather O'Donnell, a book seller at Bauman Rare Books in New York City.

"It's an incredibly exciting book. Every page is visibly beautiful. Even a single page of a Nuremberg Chronicle has genuine value," O'Donnell said. "It's a landmark of printing ... There's always more buyers than copies available."

Bauman's store sold a complete copy with hand-colored illustrations for more than $300,000 in 2006.

"It was a stunning book, really incredible," O'Donnell said.

She said $35,000 was a fair price for Sander's book, given its condition, and she didn't think it would be difficult to sell, noting many collectors want it not because of its monetary value, but for its literary significance.

"They have a desire to own it and cherish it and preserve it for future generations," O'Donnell said. "They see it as a part of western civilization and want to pass it on."

The owner of Sander's book has declined to be identified, but said it was passed down to him by his great uncle and had just been gathering dust in his attic. He had no idea of its worth or historical significance.

Since publicizing the find in April, Sanders said he has received dozens of calls and emails from interested buyers.

"Hundreds and hundreds of people have come through the store wanting to see the book," he said. "We just don't handle a lot of five-century-old books here in Utah, and the public interest has just been phenomenal. It's still so exciting."

The novel's hero, Irish immigrant Danny Delacy, is modelled upon Miles Franklin's paternal grandfather, Joseph Franklin, and the exploits and adventures of four generations of Delacys on the land around the headwaters of the Murrumbidgee River follow roughly the fortunes of the Franklin family from 1833 to 1933. 'Fearless Danny's' story begins in 1833 by the Shannon in County Clare when he and his Johanna elope and take ship for the Antipodes. In Sydney, discovering that land grants had ceased in 1831, Danny sets out as a hired man for Bandalong, one of the most remote stations, far beyond the already-populated Goulburn plains, past Lake George, Gounderu (Gundaroo) and the Limestone Plains. Always the mountains further south beckon Danny 'as the Lorelei', so after a spell of hired labour to accumulate fifty head of cattle and a dozen horses he finally makes his way to a valley that the Aborigines call Burrabinga. As the seasons pass, the station, Burrabinga, is carved out of virgin land and Johanna produces sons and daughters who go to school in Sydney and become the second Delacy generation. Significant Australian events dot the narrative, conveying a sense of historical continuity - the gold rushes, the Robertson and Duffy Land Acts, free selection, self-government, the Boer War. From its cohesive opening the narrative falls away (especially after the first generation) into a discursive series of episodes and events, broken only by the favourite Miles Franklin device of 'possuming' or yarning - meandering, conversational reflections on the rapidly changing scene. Generations merge, each leaving its imprint on the others. Themes become interwoven, the focus of attention shifting easily from one to another. The novel's canvas becomes crowded with more and more participants as the century gradually moves to its ending in the modern day (1933) when the fourth generation Brian Delacy, aviator, lifting his plane into the Murrumbidgee sky, glimpses in his mind's eye 'the spectral forms of bullock transport and receding Delacys moving against ancient unfamiliar apparitions on the palimpsest of Time'.

The "Enlightenment" was not a single movement or school of thought, for these philosophies were often mutually contradictory or divergent. The Enlightenment was less a set of ideas than it was a set of values. At its core was a critical questioning of traditional institutions, customs, and morals, and a strong belief in rationality and science. Thus, there was still a considerable degree of similarity between competing philosophies. Some historians also include the late 17th century as part of the Enlightenment. Review for the book "Elizabeth Finch: The Gritty And Dirty Life Of A Girl Wronged."

When I started reading this book, I thought maybe I should put it down. The reason for that is because of the all the in your face cursing and sex that's in the book. However, I didn't put it down and I'm glad that I kept reading.

This book tells of a girl who was so wronged by her mother, that my heart went out to her. From the time the character Elizabeth was a baby, her mother wanted nothing to do with her.

"I have to say, I cried."

With all the characters in the book I was taken back by how real they seemed. It seemed like a movie or something straight out of the headlines.

All in all the book was an amazing read. Author Sahara Hill did a fantastic job with captivating her audience and taking fiction storytelling to the next level. The grittiness and in your face scenes is so gripping that you can't stop reading.

I recommend this book to all adults who want to read a story such as "Elizabeth Finch: The Gritty And Dirty Life Of A Girl Wronged."

Well done to author Sahara Hill.

Robert the Devil (Gilbert)-is an operatic parody by W. S. Gilbert of Giacomo Meyerbeer's romantic opera Robert le diable, which was named after, but bears little resemblance to, the medieval French legend of the same name. Gilbert set new lyrics to tunes by Meyerbeer, Hérold, Bellini, Hervé, Offenbach and others, arranged by Mr. Kettenus, the theatre's music director.

Robert the Devil was part of a triple bill that opened John Hollingshead's new Gaiety Theatre in London on 21 December 1868. Also on the programme, preceding Gilbert's piece, were a one-act adaptation by Gilbert Arthur à Beckett of a French operetta by Émile Jonas, called The Two Harlequins, and a three-act parody of L'Escamoteur by Paulin Meunier, adapted by Alfred Thompson, called On the Cards. All three of these were parodies of operas written between 1830 and 1840

Orthographic Depth-of an alphabetic orthography indicates the degree to which it deviates from simple one-to-one letter-phoneme correspondence.

Deep orthographies are writing systems that do not have a one-to-one correspondence between sounds (phonemes) and the letters (graphemes) that represent them. Shallow orthographies have a one-to-one relationship between graphemes and phonemes, and the spelling of words is very consistent. The Three Apples-also known as Hikayat al-sabiyya 'l-muqtula ("The Tale of the Murdered Young Woman"), one of the tales narrated by Scheherazade in the One Thousand and One Nights. In this tale, a fisherman discovers a heavy locked chest along the Tigris river and he sells it to the Abbasid Cliph, Harun-al Rashid, who then has the chest broken open only to find inside it the dead body of a young woman who was cut into pieces.

"The Three Apples" served as an inspiration for Hugo von Hofmannsthal's The Golden Apple (Der Goldene Apfel) (1897). It has also been noted that the flashback narrated by the young man in "The Three Apples" resembles the later story of Shakespeare's Othello (1603), which was itself based on "Un Capitano Moro", a tale from Giovanni Battista Giraldi's Gli Hecatommithi (1565).

Tina Fey’s memoir ‘Bossypants’ released!

(The Daily Caller) 30 Rock star Tina Fey’s book Bossypants, a reflection on her comedy career, hits bookshelves on Tuesday.

According to NPR, the memoir includes Fey’s stories from The Second City comedy theater in Chicago, Saturday Night Live, and 30 Rock. The SNL veteran, film actress, and Emmy-winner surely has lots of Hollywood memories to share with readers. In addition to scoring the Mark Twain Prize for American humor, Fey has penned screenplays, appeared in blockbuster hits like Mean Girls and Baby Mama, created 30 Rock, and been named Entertainment Weekly’s Entertainer of the Decade. During the 2008 presidential election cycle, Fey portrayed vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, wowing audience members everywhere with her resemblance to the Alaskan governor.

Janeane Garofalo of NPR said Fey was unfairly treated for this impersonation, stating, “Another area of interest to me was Tina’s discussion of what happened when she impersonated Sarah Palin on SNL and became a target of ill-founded wrath. Regrettably, it’s always been easy to marshal cultural hostility toward women. Especially in politics, where double standards and misogyny tend to dominate the conversation… It is something that, as Fey rightly points out, has never happened to Dan Aykroyd, Dana Carvey, or many other men who do political satire.”

The cover shows Fey with hirsute, manly arms, seeming to imply that the actress had to channel her masculine side to be taken seriously in comedy. As Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times put it, “There’s Fey on the cover looking fabulous but not owning it (her airbrushed face is framed by two large and hairy male arms), and the back is filled with fake and self-deprecating quotes regarding her appearance and talent. Pay them no mind; inside lies a collection of autobiographical essays that should (but of course won’t) prove once and for all that pretty is nowhere near as important as funny, and funny doesn’t work without that rare balance of truth and heart.”

Hayy ibn Yaqdhan- is"The Self-Taught Philosopher": The Improvement of Human Reason: Exhibited in the Life of Hai Ebn Yokdhan) was the first Arabic novel and the first philosophical novel, written by Ibn Tufail (also known as Aben Tofail or or Ebn Tophail), a Moorish philosopher and physician, in early 12th century islamic Spain.

Ibn Tufail's Hayy ibn Yaqdhan had a significant influence on Arabic literature, Persian literature, and European literature after it was translated in 1671 into Latin and then into several other European languages. The work also had a "profound influence" on both classical Islamic philosophy and modern Western philosophy,[6] and became "one of the most important books that heralded the Scientific Revolution" and European Enlightenment. The novel is also considered a precursor to the European bildungsroman genre.

Herodotus-was an ancient Greek historian who was born in Halicarnassus, Caria (modern day Bodrum, Turkey) and lived in the 5th century BC (c. 484 BC – c. 425 BC). He has been called the "Father of History" since he was the first historian known to collect his materials systematically, test their accuracy to a certain extent and arrange them in a well-constructed and vivid narrative.

(Reuters) – Actress Kate Winslet will author a book of celebrity self-portrait photos by Ben Stiller, Jude Law, Meryl Streep and others to support the treatment of autism, Simon & Schuster said on Thursday.

Winslet organized the collection of self-portrait photos for the book titled "The Golden Hat" after becoming inspired by an HBO documentary she narrated called "A Mother's Courage: Talking Back To Autism" that aired last year.

The film shows Keli Ericsdottir, an Icelandic boy who suffered from severe non-verbal autism, eventually being able to communicate. He now composes poems, including one describing a magical hat that enables an autistic boy to communicate.

The book, which will be released later this year, derives its name from Ericsdottir's poem and tells the story of Winslet's relationship with the Ericsdottir family as well as Keli Ericsdottir's poetry and writings.

Winslet asked more than two dozen celebrities to take a self-portrait photo wearing one special hat that was passed along, as well as including what their first words would be had they been suddenly able to communicate after years of locked in silence.

Other well-known figures in the book include comedian Ricky Gervais, tennis player Maria Sharapova, singer Christina Aguilera and actresses Naomi Watts and Julianne Moore.

Several people diagnosed with autism also appear in the book. Proceeds from the book's profits will benefit Winslet's autism charity "The Golden Hat Foundation."

OMG! Online abbreviations make Oxford dictionary!

(AP) OMG! LOL! The venerable Oxford English Dictionary approves of the three-letter, Internet-inspired expressions you use for "Oh, my God!" and "Laughing out loud."

It is adding them to the authoritative reference book's latest online update.

You can now text the news to your BFF. That's "best friends forever."

All three expressions — and IMHO, or "in my humble opinion" — are among 900 new words included this week. Cracking the dictionary, however, is no easy task.

"The OED is quite cautious," said Graeme Diamond, OED's principal editor for new words.

Terms made popular online are only included among the dictionary's 300,000 entries when they have crossed over into everyday use, Diamond said.

Although the new abbreviations are associated with modern electronic communications, some are surprisingly old. The first confirmed use of OMG was in a 1917 letter by a British admiral.

"Things people think are new words normally have a longer history," Diamond said.

Editors publish updates to the online Oxford every three months.

The OED's Internet version was launched in 2000 and gets 2 million hits a month from subscribers. It may replace the mammoth 20-volume printed edition, last published in 1989.

The new update also includes:

• "muffin top," "a protuberance of flesh above the waistband of a tight pair of trousers."
• wag, "wives and girlfriends." It was first used in 2002 to describe the female partners of members of the England soccer team. Now it denotes the glamorous and extravagant female partners of male celebrities.
"By our standards, wag is a real rocket of a word," Diamond said. "To go from being coined in 2002 to being included in 2011 is quite unusual."
• "heart" as a verb, a casual equivalent of "to love" that is represented with a symbol, as seen on millions of souvenirs proclaiming "I (heart) New York."

It may be the first English usage to come from T-shirts and bumper stickers. "At some point, people started to vocalize what the symbol was rather than what the symbol stood for," said Fiona McPherson, another editor. "People now talk about hearting things left, right and center."

Well, the latest update hearts the Road Runner cartoon character. The word "meep" — a short high-pitched sound — made the cut.

There are other new terms from the online world, including ego-surfing (the practice of searching for your own name on the Internet) and dot-bomb (a failed Internet company).

Diamond said the Internet has revolutionized the way lexicographers work, giving them a huge amount of new evidence of word use.

Which brings us to another new online-inspired word: TMI, "too much information."

Speech balloon-(also speech bubbles, dialogue balloons or word balloons) are a graphic convention used most commonly in comic books, comic strips and cartoons to allow words (and much less often, pictures) to be understood as representing the speech or thoughts of a given character in the comic. There is often a formal distinction between the balloon that indicates thoughts and the one that indicates words spoken aloud: the bubble that conveys subjective thoughts is often referred to as a thought balloon.

One of the earliest antecedents to the modern speech bubble were the “speech scrolls”, wispy lines that connected first person speech to the mouths of the speakers in Mesoamerican art.

Quill-is a writing implement made from a flight feather (preferably a primary wing-feather) of a large bird. Quills were used for writing with ink before the invention of the dip pen, metal-nibbed pens, the fountain pen, and, eventually, the ballpoint pen. The hand-cut goose quill is rarely still used as a calligraphy tool, mainly because many papers are derived from wood pulp and wear down the quill very quickly, but it is still the tool of choice for a few select professionals and does provide a sharp stroke, and more flexibility than a steel pen. The hollow shaft of the feather (calamus) acts as an ink reservoir and ink flows to the tip by capillary action.

Academic Authorship-is a by which academics communicate the results of their scholarly work, establish priority for their discoveries, and build their reputation among their peers.

In academic publishing, authorship of a work is claimed by those making intellectual contributions to the completion of the research described in the work. In simple cases, a solitary scholar carries out a research project and writes the subsequent article or book.

In many disciplines, however, collaboration is the norm and issues of authorship can be controversial. In these contexts, authorship can encompass activities other than writing the article; a researcher who comes up with an experimental design and analyzes the data may be considered an author, even if he had little role in composing the text describing the results. According to some standards, even writing the entire article would not constitute authorship unless the writer was also involved in at least one other phase of the project.

This "quick lit trend" is one that keeps stories interesting. It can truly pump up the dialogue between characters in a story. Yes, it's all about "irony."

Irony-is a rhetorical device, literary technique, or situation in which there is a sharp incongruity or discordance that goes beyond the simple and evident intention of words or actions. Ironic statements (verbal irony) usually convey a meaning exactly opposite from their literal meaning.

The discordance of verbal irony is created as a means of communication (as in art or rhetoric). Descriptions or depictions of situational ironies, whether in fiction or in non-fiction, serve a communicative function of sharpening or highlighting certain discordant features of reality.

In the english language there is no standard accepted method to denote irony or sarcasm in written conversation, several forms of punctuation have been proposed. Among the oldest and frequently attested are the percontation point, — also known as an ironicon — invented by Henry Denham in the 1580s, and the irony mark, furthered by Alcanter de Brahm in the 19th century. Both of these marks were represented visually by a backwards question mark.

When it comes to this "quick lit trend", especially in writing, it's usage will always be on trend. Many writers use "irony" or sarcasm to make the story interesting and to add style and flare to the characters and to the dialogue.

Using "irony" in a story is someting that every writer can use no matter what. It will forever be on trend in writing for years to come.

Alliterative verse, or Prosody-is a form of verse that uses alliteration as the principal structuring device to unify lines of poetry, as opposed to other devices such as rhyme. The most commonly studied traditions of alliterative verse are those found in the oldest literature of many German languages.

Alliterative verse can be found in many other languages as well, although rarely with the systematic rigor of Germanic forms. The Finnish Kalevala and the Estonian Kalevipoeg both use alliterative forms derived from folk tradition. Traditional Turkic verse, for example that of the Uyghur, is also alliterative.

Sales of e-books jump in January past hardcovers!

(AP) The e-book boom has reached new heights, but not high enough to boost book sales overall.

Helped by millions of Kindles, Nooks and other digital devices given for holiday gifts, e-book sales jumped in January and surpassed purchases of hardcovers and mass market paperbacks, according to a new survey. The Association of American Publishers reported Thursday that e-sales more than doubled from $32.4 million in January 2010 to $69.9 million in January 2011.

Hardcovers sales fell from $55.4 million to $49.1 million, and mass market paperbacks, a format that's declining as baby boomers seek books with larger print, fell from $56.4 million to $39 million.

Total sales, which include the education and professional markets, were $805.7 million in January, slightly below the $821.5 million reported last year.

Not all AAP members participate, but the survey includes results from Random House, Inc., Simon & Schuster and other leading publishers.

The new numbers "pretty much reflect reality," Simon & Schuster CEO and president Carolyn Reidy said Thursday, although she cautioned that e-sales tend to be especially high in January as new customers test the format.

She said e-sales likely dropped after January but will settle at a level that's still substantially higher than last year. Reidy said e-books were around 8 to 9 percent of the general trade market at the end of 2010 and she expects them to reach 12 to 15 percent of the market this year.

"When people start out with e-books, they like the convenience and the ease," Reidy said. "They tend to experiment with different kinds of books."

Michelle Obama to write book about White House garden!

(Reuters) U.S. first lady Michelle Obama will write a book about the kitchen garden she started at the White House and her efforts to promote healthy eating, the Crown publishing group said on Wednesday.

The as yet untitled book will be published in April 2012, and will see Michelle Obama describing how she was inspired to plant the first edible garden on the White House's South Lawn since Eleanor Roosevelt's World War Two era "victory garden."

She will also share some of her family's favorite healthy recipes, said Crown, a unit of Random House publishers.

Crown said Michelle Obama received no advance and would donate the proceeds to a charity to be determined later.

The book will include photos of Obama's White House garden as well as other community, urban and school gardens around the United States,

The first lady has been a strong advocate of healthy eating and exercise and in February 2010 launched her "Let's Move!" initiative aimed at beating child obesity and improving the quality of food in U.S. schools.

Old Norse Poetry-encompasses a range of verse forms written in Old Norse, during the period from the 8th century (see Eggjum stone) to as late as the far end of the 13th century. Most of the Old Norse poetry that survives was preserved in Iceland, but there are also 122 preserved poems in Swedish rune inscriptions, 54 in Norwegian and 12 in Danish.

Old Norse poetry is characterised by alliteration, a poetic vocabulary expanded by heiti, and use of kennings. An important source of information about poetic forms in Old Norse is the Prose Edda of Snorri Sturluson.

Old Norse poetry is conventionally, and somewhat arbitrarily, split into two types; Eddaic poetry (also sometimes known as Eddic poetry) and skaldic poetry. Eddaic poetry includes the poems of the Codex Regius and a few other similar ones. Skaldic poetry is usually defined as everything else not already mentioned.

Kenning-is a type of literary trope, specifically circumlocution, in the form of a compound(usually two words, often hyphenated) that employs figurative language in place of a more concrete single-word noun.

In literature, a kenning is a magic poetic phrase, a figure of speech, substituted for the usual name of a person or thing. Kennings work in much the same way as epithets and verbal formulae, and were commonly inserted into Old English poetic lines.

Cave Painting-are paintings on cave walls and ceilings, and the term is used especially for those dating to prehistoric times. The earliest European cave paintings date to Aurignacain, some 32,000 years ago.

The purpose of the paleolithic cave paintings is not known. The evidence suggests that they were not merely decorations of living areas, since the caves in which they have been found do not have signs of ongoing habitation. Also, they are often in areas of caves that are not easily accessed. Some theories hold that they may have been a way of communicating with others, while other theories ascribe them a religious or

QUICK LIT BITE OF THE DAY

Alice Walker-is an African American author and poet. She has written at length on issues of race and gender, and is most famous for the critically acclaimed novel The Color Purple for which she won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Walker's first book of poetry was written while she was still a senior at Sarah Lawrence, and she took a brief sabbatical from writing when she was in Mississippi working in the civil rights movement.

In 1982, Walker would publish what has become her best-known work, the novel The Color Purple. About a young ugly black woman fighting her way through not only racist white culture but also patriarchal black culture, it was a resounding commercial success. The book became a bestseller and was subsequently adapted into a critically acclaimed 1985 movie as well as a 2005 Broadway musical play.

This "quick lit trend" has alot to do with dramatics, film, speaking one's thoughts before a crowd or to another character. Yes, we are talking about "monogloues."

Monologues-is when the character may be speaking his or her thoughts aloud, directly addressing another character, or speaking to the audience, especially the former.

Monologues are common across the range of dramatic media (plays, films, animation, etc.). It is distinct from a soliloquy, which is where a character relates his or her thoughts and feelings to him/herself and to the audience without addressing any of the other characters. It is also distinct from an apostrophe, wherein the speaker or writer addresses an imaginary person, or inanimate object, or idea.

The term "monologue" was actually used to describe a form of popular narrative verse, sometimes comic, often dramatic or sentimental, which was performed in music halls or in domestic entertainments in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Characters would break out, announcing their thoughts to themselves.

*Monologues will always be a "literary trend" because of the realness they often bring to the literary world. When they are written with real literary flavor it's truly amazing how you can relate to what the person is saying. In today's society, putting on a one-person show is a trend, and with that "monolgues" aren't going away anytime soon.

Dante Alighieri-commonly known as Dante, was a major Italian poet of the Middle Ages. His Divine Comedy, originally called Commedia and later called Divina by Boccaccio, is considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature.

The Divine Comedy describes Dante's journey through Hell (Inferno), Purgatory(Purgatorio), and Paradise (Paradiso), guided first by the Roman poet Virgil and then by Beatrice, the subject of his love and of another of his works, La Vita Nuova. While the vision of Hell, the Inferno, is vivid for modern readers, the theological niceties presented in the other books require a certain amount of patience and knowledge to appreciate. Purgatorio, the most lyrical and human of the three, also has the most poets in it; Paradiso, the most heavily theological, has the most beautiful and ecstatic mystic passages in which Dante tries to describe what he confesses he is unable to convey

Jacob van Maerlant-was the greatest Flemish poet of the thirteenth century and one of the most important Middle Dutch authors during the Middle Ages. His early works are Middle Dutch translations of French romances. Jacob's most serious work in the field of romance was his Historie van Troyen (c. 1264), a poem of some forty thousand lines, translated and amplified from the Roman de Troie of Benoît de Sainte-Maure.
